Black-owned Businesses Hiring Near You

Black-owned businesses are more than likely committed to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), so job seekers could find a secure career in those spaces.

The Brookings Institution cited a 2001 study—nearly 24 years old—to draw this conclusion. However, with DEI initiatives frozen or eliminated at government and private sector agencies, many Black Americans and other people of color are finding it difficult to keep or find jobs at places with majority non-White leadership.

In video: brands like Target that rescinded their DEI commitments led to Black customers threatening boycotts and searching for Black-owned brands to support directly.

Are Black-owned businesses hiring Black and other PoC employees at the same or higher levels as they were two decades ago? If so, where are they hiring?

Who’s Hiring and Where

Health care and social assistance, the professional, scientific and technical services, and administrative/ waste management/remediation services are the top three job categories for Black-owned businesses. That’s the latest information from the 2023 U.S. Census Bureau Annual Business Survey. Job seekers would want to prioritize those areas if or when looking for employment with Black-owned establishments.

Below is a breakdown of some companies within each three area listing jobs within the past six months:

High net-worth individuals may want to consider increasing their investments in Black-owned companies to increase the odds of equitable employment opportunities and demonstrate their allegiance to DEI efforts.
